Your research question should clearly ask about a specific political phenomenon you are interested in investigating.

Your theory statement should state your guess/prediction about what is occurring (what is actually going on) with the political phenomenon you are investigating. For example, what is your guess/prediction about what is causing (or causing changes/variation in) the specific political phenomenon you are investigating? Explain your guess/prediction about the relationship(s) among the factors at the heart of the political phenomenon you are investigating.

Your hypothesis statement should re-state your theory in simpler terms of a testable/provable statement that contains your clearly defined independent variable(s) and dependent variable(s). For example, “X will likely cause an increase in Y”.

Your null hypothesis statement should state what you would expect to find (what you expect to see in your collected evidence) if your theory were wrong and the relationship or effects that you predict actually does not exist.
