University of Southern California Landslide Hazards in Mt Elgon Paper
Question Description
reading and research discussion. read the attached article.
Choose one of the spatial analysis methods employed, or terrain analysis methods employed, in the Mt. Elgon case study presented in the Bamutaze chapter. Conduct online research in related academic literature to help you better understand the methodology. Your goal is to critically evaluate the method as described and employed in the case study, and thus youre looking for literature that helps you do so. You must look beyond readings already assigned for this class, though any of these may also be used in support of your critique.
Closely examine the cartographic representations of all the results in the case study and consider how well how clearly, how accurately, etc. they represent the results.
Introduce your critical evaluation of your chosen methodology as employed in the case study and provide your supporting research to support your evaluation in the Deliverables section below, providing the following information in your own words:
answer these questions…..
A critical evaluation of the case study methodology, including
i. The spatial or terrain analysis methodology chosen to evaluate;
ii. A description of the authors stated purpose for utilizing this particular method;
iii. The stated parameters (e.g. input layers into the analysis, distance band for hot spot, or algorithms applied) of the analysis (if not provided, comment on what they should be);
iv. If, in your opinion, the analysis was applied correctly and why, drawing explicitly on the research you conducted;
v. If the results were correctly interpreted and why, drawing explicitly on the research you conducted; and
vi. A short description of the additional information on parameterization that you would have found useful for understanding the utility of the analysis;
The citation(s) for your additional research that support your critique(s);
Need 3 citations, Does not matter if the citation is from website, article, ….
A summary critique of the cartographic representations presented in the chapter, answering the following questions:
- Do the results presented match the goal of the study?
- Are the maps clearly legible and include all pertinent cartographic elements?
- Are the maps well placed within the document?
Note: Figure 3.8 (C) is not just a grey map, you have to zoom in.
Respond to the following questions: What other aspects of the case study were of most interest to you and why? How might any of the methods employed in the case study be used in your own field?
my own field: civil engineering, or it could be any engineering field, does not matter
Dont have to be long, 1000-1500 words, as long as you answer all the questions.
