University of South Florida Reciprocal Socialization Discussion

I’m attaching the readings (please use the readings since it’s required to use terms from there and make a glossary of the terms used at the end. I will also tell you what you can talk about in regards to me since it’s based on an experience. You can make up the rest)

Critical Thinking Assignment #1 Instructions

This week, you’ve been learning about how you have become the social person that you are. Hopefully you’re thinking about how your surroundings have impacted your socialization, and perhaps maybe even how YOU have impacted others!

To think critically about this, please reflect on your own life experiences and how they pertain to popular culture and the media (one of the most controversial agents of socialization!). Please address the following questions in approximately 3 paragraphs (a paragraph should contain at least 4-5 sentences!). Submit your final paper in the dropbox below.

1. In one paragraph (4-5 sentences), I would like you to talk about a time in your life when you found yourself influenced by a pop-culture figure (this would include singers, actors, athletes, and any other entertainers in popular culture). “Influence” includes any behaviors you adopted to emulate the pop-culture figure. For example, if you adopted a particular style of clothing or style of communication based upon what you learned from the entertainer then you would explain this influence in detail. (2 pts)

2. In your second paragraph (4-5 sentences), using your new knowledge, analyze your experience from a social psychological perspective! Describe how the new behavior you adopted from your pop-culture figure was received by your family and friends. In other words, did anyone notice a change in your behavior? If so, how did they react and how did it make you feel? Use a key term from class (notes or book) in this paragraph to explain how your experience is an example of the material that you have learned. Underline the key term that you selected. (3 pts)

3. In your third paragraph (4-5 sentences), using your new knowledge, analyze your experience from a social psychological perspective! Reflect on the possible motivations you had for adopting the new behavior that you learned from your pop-culture figure. Was your motivation to fit in with people, maybe to stand out, or something else? Use another key term from class (notes or book) in this paragraph to explain how your experience is an example of the material that you have learned. Underline the key term that you selected. (3 pts)

4. Please provide a glossary at the end, with definitions of each term you used. Copying the definition word-for-word from the book or notes is absolutely fine! When taken from the readings, adding a page number is super helpful! (2 pts)
