Question Description

identify the 8 costs below for the project filtered tidal barrage

Stakeholder example EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency)

The problem:

In the currents of Tampa Bay and in many other bodies of water, microplastics pollute the environment. These small particles of plastic are then consumed by the wildlife in the area. This leaves the animal without the nutrition it needs but with a full stomach, so they die of starvation (Dalton). The waters of Tampa Bay and its surrounding area are home to many animals, including endangered species that are affected by microplastic pollution. Tampa Bay is also home to humans, who are also affected by microplastics on a daily basis.

The introduction of microplastics into the environment is a product of human behavior. The mass use of plastic in modern times leads to a mass amount of plastic pollution poured into the oceans, which breaks down and becomes microplastic. Microplastic is also intentionally used in products such as some beauty products, toothpaste, and clothing (Dalton). Those particles get washed down into the ocean and end up harming life there.

The solution

In order to combat the ever-growing presence of microplastics in Tampa Bay our proposed solution is the creation of a modified tidal barrage. A tidal barrage is a form of hydroelectric power that uses the ever flowing ocean current’s kinetic energy to spin a turbine and generate electricity. But in order to do so tidal barrages block off sections of water, like a wall, and then only allow water to flow through in certain areas. We plan on putting filtration systems in the channels and using the kinetic energy of the tides for the water to be pushed through the filter and hopefully leave the microplastic residue behind to be disposed of. We intend on creating these tidal barrages at key locations around Tampa Bay as a source of renewable energy and water filtration.
