Directions: Respond to these three questions in well organized and comprehensive essays. Be sure to respond to each facet of all questions. Be sure that you provide examples to illustrate your claims and demonstrate your command of the material in question. The questions are written to encourage your analysis of the material and to encourage you to arrive at unique insights to course material.

1. Define ideology. What defining characteristics does ideology possess that distinguish it from other forms of memory? What makes ideology such a significant and profound social construct. Discuss the function of ideologies. What are the consequences (intended and unintended) of ideology? Be sure to incorporate the “hegemony” concept in your discussion. How can identity management in interpersonal and mediated contexts contribute to a cultural ideology? What is the relationship of identities and ideology? Provide examples to support your claim.

2. Define and discuss the following terms: Attitudes, beliefs, values, social norms, and schemas. Be sure to highlight what distinguishes the terms from one another. Use this discussion to explain why attitudes may be difficult to change. Be sure to incorporate some of the reasons that attitudes may be difficult to change.

3. Petty and Cacioppo describe two different ways that people are persuaded. Identify those two routes to persuasion. What is elaboration? Identify and discuss the factors that influence a receiver’s motivation to elaborate. Identify and discuss the factors that influence a receiver’s ability to elaborate. What are heuristics? When are they likely to be used to process persuasive messages? Discuss five examples of heuristics. Finally, be sure to describe the relationship between these two routes to persuasion.
