Context:

Milgram, Maslow, Kohlberg and John Stuart Mill all examine the tradeoff between the need for conformity and the desire for freedom in any society

Milgram examines the necessity of, the reasons for, and the dark side of obedience to authority.

Kohlberg studies the moral stages of why individuals do, or don’t, obey authority.

Mill is concerned about the tyranny of the masses and argues for the need for the protection of individual freedom of thought and action in the face of the power of social conformity.

Maslow gives us an understanding of how individuals can move beyond our basic need for security and also how individuals can be manipulated by fear and the need for security.

Assignment:

1. Compare and Contrast the ideas of how each of these four scholars address the need for both the protection of individual freedom and obedience to authority.
2. How can these ideas help us to understand how governments and society control the behavior of individuals? The efforts of government and society to deal with the coronavirus pandemic and people’s responses to the pandemic provide us with numerous examples that are relevant to the ideas of these scholars. Please give some specific “real world” coronavirus examples.
3. In your response, please use examples from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
4. Reply thoughtfully to at least two of your fellow students.
