University of Miami Problem Solving Techniques Discussion
Question Description
– respond to the paragraph minimum of 200 words.
I found that the six-steps for problem-solving with data were the most meaningful to me. The 6 steps are as followed: Ask the right questions, collect relevant data, determine answers based on data, present answers, develop solutions, and review implemented solutions. These are meaningful to me because I already do these 6 steps daily at my job, without even knowing that I did them. For example, If a person calls 911 because someone else is unresponsive, I then ask is they are breathing (asking questions). Based on their answer (collecting) I give them different instructions (analyze). If they say the person is not breathing I give them instructions on how to perform CPR (present). I stay on the line listening to the person counting their chest compression’s and give them feedback regarding if they are going too fast or too slow (solutions). Lastly, once responders have arrived and the call is complete, I fill out a form to be reviewed by a medical director (monitor and review). I understand that this is more of a clinical example rather than from the administrative side. From an Emergency Management Director’s point of view, a problem could be a natural disaster. Questions: what resources are needed and where, Collect: access damage and document location, Analyze: Use data collected to determine what resources are needed, Present: contact the operator of each resource and provide them with the information needed, Develop: doing clean up by using resources needed, Monitor: constantly review what is happening in the field and ensure tasks are being completed. These problem-solving steps are important because, no matter what field you are in, there will be problems that you may have to solve. This method gives you clear instructions on what to do to make sure the problem is solved quickly and efficiently and hopefully doesn’t occur again. Do you think that this method can be used in all fields? Have you ever had to use problem-solving methods in your work or daily life, if so did you do something similar to this theory or not, and how well did it work for you?
