In constructing your refutation or rebuttal argument, keep in mind the guidelines Dorothy Seyler outlines in RRW (202):

Ÿ Read Accurately: Do not fall into the straw man fallacy

Ÿ Pinpoint Weaknesses in Original Argument: Be sure to analyze the writer’s claims

Ÿ Write Your Claim: Make sure your thesis is one with which others may disagree; it should challenge the original writer’s logic, assumptions, evidence, analysis, or all of these

Ÿ Use a Logical Organizational Structure: Seyler suggests restating (fairly) the writer’s argument; stating your claim; and developing your refutation/rebuttal

Format: 850-1250 words double-spaced with 1-inch margins, and 12-point sized standard font. Use MLA or APA format. Be sure to include both in-text citations and a Works Cited page for all sources used and quoted. Chapter 14 in the textbook is your guide to how to cite specific types of works, including digital sources.
