Discussion Prompt: Effects of Aging

As we age, many changes take place in our bodies (bones weaken, senses fade, memory gets lost, immune system weakens, etc.). Read Ecclesiastes 12:1-6 and pick three effects of aging that Solomon speaks about. Complete the following in your discussion post:

1. Discuss what is happening biologically in the Ecclesiastes passage, using your textbook for supporting information on the science. For example, “the grinders cease because they are few, and those who look through the windows are dimmed” means that as we age, we lose our teeth and our vision. You would then describe the process by which teeth decay and vision is lost using the textbook as a scientific resource.

2. Share what your learned about three consequences of aging, using the biblical passage and your research from your textbook. Are there medical advances to help counteract each of these consequences of aging? You may need to do some additional research to complete your post.

3. Watch the TED-Ed video: “Why do our bodies age?” (5:09).

4. What controls the aging process, and can we overcome this process? In light of a biblical worldview, do you think that man should use science and medicine to thwart the effects of aging, or should we accept it as a natural process?
