The Latin Explosion: A New America

This week one of your handouts for this week was a link to a documentary called The Latin Explosion: A New America.  This is a great account of understanding what it means to be a minority (but, not for long!) only to be shaped by as well as shape the environment into something totally new and different for everyone.  This documentary is a great opportunity to apply Galan’s Multidimensional Transactional Model and is the basis of this assignment.

Address the following question.

Using the Multidimensional Transactional Model:

1. Identify two individuals in the documentary and briefly discuss how they are generally recognized as contributing to the music scene.
2. Based on your observations of these individuals and what you know about the minority and dominant cultural norms/values, tell us where each individual is with regard to Galan’s 2-dimensional model for adaptation.  For example, each individual should demonstrate characteristics (those mentioned or observed) that suggest to you whether or where they have high or low adherence to minority/majority culture.
3. Tell us what characteristics you are basing your determinations on and explain the characteristics connection to minority/dominant cultural norms/values.
4. In what ways might 1) ethclass; 2) transitional marginality; and 3) the continuum of time play a role in your determinations?
