Texas Southern University Income Inequality Discussion

OVERVIEW

Empowerment and Social Capital theories are very useful in socialwork mainly because of their flexibility and applicability across allsystem levels. They are also a preferred approach because they areusually consistent with how we approach social work practice (i.e. usinga strengths perspective, serving as a broker or facilitator, etc.) ingeneral. To have strong social capital in one or more areas also meanswe are more empowered to actualize our best lives in other areas. Wewere presented with quite a bit of information this week so my goal hereis to get feedback from you about what you reviewed.

1. What were your thoughts about the documentary Inequality forAll and Reich’s position about the state of income equality in theUnited States? Did you agree or disagree with his position and why?

2. Which empowerment/social capital theoretical perspectives didyou read about in your textbook that was also observed in thedocumentary? In what ways did your understanding of the theoreticalperspectives support or detract from Reich’s argument?
