Question Description
Throughout the semester we have engaged in the interdisciplinary study of incarceration in the United States. We have explored how racial, societal, economic, and political issues -among others- are intrinsically connected to policing, criminalization, and the development of the largest prison system in the world.
Step 1- Based on the course content covered throughout this semester, you will be in charge of creating a piece of your authorship.
a) Performed: dance, music, theatre, spoken word, song
b) Presented: drawing, sculpture, quilt, black out poetry, short story, poetry, activist project
c) Produced: podcast, media arts, etc.
Step 2- This project should:
(a) engage directly to one of the issues explored in class (i.e. red lining; defunding schools; migration; convict leasing; incarcerated agricultural workforce, etc.)
(b) be connected to our initial larger question: Why prisons?
Step 3- Along with your piece, you will write a 2-4 page (double space, title) essay in which
you:
a) Explain what social issue you are exploring with your piece.
b) What is your position regarding to this issue?
c) Explain how the social issue connects to a specific course material studied in class.
d) Critically analyze the content of your piece.
e) Explain how your piece connects to the larger question: Why prisons?
Grading (200 pts):
Creative piece 100 The concept of the piece engages with ideas and themes from class in a meaningful way. (50 pts) pts The piece demonstrates and encourages deep thinking about prison and incarceration (50 pts)
