Week 3’s readings: “At the Western Palace” in The Woman Warrior
INSTRUCTIONS:
Your online reading journal should be your “golden lines” from the weekly readings. A “Golden line” is simply a line or two that jumps out at you while you are reading the course material. It could either be something that you find interesting or confusing or both. It could be something that makes you mad or something that engaged you in a way you hadn’t thought of before.
You need to have one entry per reading. For example, since this week there are two readings, you need two golden line journal entries.
The purpose of the online journals is to learn to ask questions of the reading material in critical and new ways and to understand what it means to read actively.
- Choose a line or two from the readings.
- At the top of the entry, retype the line(s)–this is important so I know what lines you’re responding to.
- Why did this (or these) line(s) stand out to you?
- Why are these lines significant?
Remember, engage with the text by asking questions—What does the text say? What does the text mean? Why does the text matter?
