San Diego University Calculate & T Test for Pearson R Using Fx Function Report

Question Description

Steps for calculating Pearson’s r and a t-test for Pearson’s r

I set up an Excel sheet to calculate and run a t-test for Pearson’s r using the fx function.

From the Survey Data Set sheet of the Class Survey Data File select two sets of data you think might be and/or are curious whether they are correlated, either directly or inversely.*

1. Do NOT use “Happy,” “This Semester,” or “Last Semester” as a variable.

2. The data must be at least interval level, so you can use data from columns J through AB,

excluding those mentioned in #1 above.

3. Reminder: The Survey Question sheet of the Class Survey Data File contains the questions

for the response data in columns J through AB of the Survey Data Set.

4. Based upon the First Letter of your Last Name, input the applicable alpha into the table:

? A ? I ? alpha = .10 ? J ? Q ? alpha = .05 ? R ? Z ? alpha = .01

5. Copy & Paste your X-variable including the column heading into Column A of the Excel sheet.

6. Copy & Paste your Y-variable including the column heading into Column B of the Excel sheet.

7. The Output Table should instantly auto complete.

8. If you want to redo your work. Use Clear All or Clear Contents rather than Delete to empty

Column A and Column B or just copy & paste your new data over the old data.

9. Complete the C 13 Correlation Submission Form.*

10. When Copying & Pasting your output table to the Submission Form, copy the colored area

of the table – D3:G15 – to paste into the assignment document.

11. You may need to PASTE SPECIAL PICTURE or PASTE SPECIAL BITMAP so copied image

pastes cleanly and clearly into the space provided.

*A little upfront thinking regarding why you are choosing the variables you are will make it easier to write Step 6 of the HT (on the submission form) b/c the outcome, amongst other things, will support or not support your thinking.

*Reminder: 6 Steps of a HT –

1.State the null and alternative hypothesis

2.Set Alpha (See # 4 above.)

3.Test Statistic

4.Critical Value(s) or P-value
