San Diego State University Northern Renaissance European History Discussion

Question Description

1. The Merode Altarpiece (Gardner, p. 220) is a splendid example of the Early Renaissance style in the north of Europe. What narrative is represented in this triptych? Using your own words, account for as many symbolic references as you can, and explain how these relate to the work’s meaning. (see attached)

2. Jan Van Eyck’s Giovanni Arnolfini and His Wife, 1434 (Gardner, p. 223) is likewise replete with symbolic details. Using your own words, explain how the everyday items represented in the painting take on a sacred meaning? (see attached)

3. The triptych support is a practical structure. The panels can be folded for protection or to be moved out of harm’s way. But doesn’t the “frame” itself imply a symbolic meaning? Using your own words, explain how this might be so.
