San Diego State University Fate of Torture Discussion

For part A&B Write a 6-7 sentences each

1) When we think of Hell nowadays, we image a realm of incessant and horrific torture, torment, and physical violence (which, if you think about it long enough, seems strangely incongruous with the the belief in an insubstantial, substance-less soul). Look back over your readings for this week. Do you see any torture like this described? If so, where? Is it specific or vague? Take a look especially at two passages. (A) 2 Esdras: What strikes you about the “torments” that the author describes for wayward souls? How might you define this sort of torture? (B) Revelations: This is a very difficult text (the most difficult in the whole Bible, for my money). But read carefully: who/what is actually described as being condemned to torture? What does the text say is the fate of sinners? Is this fate “torture” of something else?
