Module 05 Discussion – Coping Mechanisms
Coping Mechanisms |
Legendary college football coach Lou Holts once said It’s not the load that breaks you down, it’s the way you carry it. Stress is a part of life and for those in law enforcement, it is an even more significant. Shift work, the repeated exposure to people in distress, the potential for violent encounters, the responsibility of protecting your community and organizational factors all weigh heavily on officers. Recognizing the causes of stress and having a plan to cope with it is essential to a successful career in law enforcement.
Initial Post (. 1 paragraph)
For your initial post, using the book Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement and one resource you located on your own, identify three causes of stress unique to law enforcement and how it can be mitigated either by individual officers or organizationally. Next, identify your own plan to cope with stress. What do you do now when you feel stressed out? What do you plan to do differently in the future?
Response Post ( 1 paragraph)
For your response post research and describe what resources are available to officers struggling with stress, ASD and PTSD. Consider your classmates posting and describe what you could do to help a fellow officer facing the stress described in the original post. What can you do as an individual? What can departments do organizationally to help prevent and reduce officer stress?
