Describe the key elements of an effective health communication plan.
Properly planned and communicated campaigns can sustain and achieve long-term results when it comes to effective health communication programs (Schiavo, 2014). Elements of an effective communication plan entail:
- Careful analysis of the situation, opportunities, and communication needs
- Understanding of constituency and audience needs and preferences
- Community and key stakeholders participation
- Early agreement on expected outcomes and evaluation parameters
- Well-defined communication objectives
- Strategies designed to meet the objectives
- Multiple and audience-specific communication channels
- Adequate funding, commitment, and human resources (Schiavo, 2014).
Why is planning so important?
Since many health organizations function in an emergency way and use communication as one of their primary tools to react to emerging health needs or crisis, there can be challenges obtaining sufficient funding for last-minute essentials (Schiavo, 2014). A major benefit of planning is gaining knowledge on health issues. Communication planning is a conscientious, problem-solving method and clinical practice that includes great evidence from well-designed training, patient beliefs, and clinicians expertise in decision making for patients (LoBiondo-Wood et al., 2017). Planning is important as it can help organizations advance its mission, engage individuals in health issues and solutions, support social change and provide additional knowledge on a health issue that is addressed and key factors influencing incidence and resolutions (Schiavo, 2014). These are just a few communication health plans as there are additional that are very beneficial in the communication planning process.
Provide examples of how public health professionals can apply ethical considerations in the planning process.
Public health professionals can apply ethical considerations in the planning process through the implementation of the public health code of ethics, and the Principles of the Ethical Practice of Public Health. This process provides information on public health values, obligations, and guidelines for all public health institutions (Slomka et al., n.d.). Examples entail addressing the fundamental caused and diseases and health requirements, put in place to prevent adverse health outcomes and programs and policies should be implemented to enhance the physical and social environment, and engage in collaboration and affiliation to build the publics trust and effectiveness (Slomka et al., n.d.). There will always be some sort of ethical challenges in public health practice. With proper planning processes, public health professionals and ethical practices can be effective in achieving its goals.
