Question Description
I’m working on a Engineering multi-part question and need an explanation to help me study.
A cast iron flywheel with an outer diameter of 250mm and thickness of t = 20mm is press fit onto a
solid steel shaft of diameter 100mm, as seen below. An interface pressure of p = 25MPa holds at a
speed of 2,400RPM.
(a) Determine the torque, T, in kN-m that is transmitted by the flywheel at this speed
(b) What is the torque transmitted by the flywheel when the interface pressure is 0?
(c) Determine the required radial interference, ?, in mm.
Let EC = 100GPa, ?C = 0.2, ES = 200GPa, ?S = 0.3, coefficient of static friction, f = 0.20 and density ? =
7.8kN*s2/m2
(note: density is the same for both materials)
