Math 1123 Project: Analysis of a studyGeneral:

? Find a newspaper or magazine article, or the online equivalent, describing theresults of a study (the results of a poll are not sufficient) published since the start ofthis year.

? Give a summary of the study’s findings, then analyze whether the article providedenough information to determine the validity of the conclusions. If not, produce alist of things that are missing from the article that would help you determine thevalidity of the study.

? Look for the things discussed in the text: population, sample, randomness, blind,control, placebos, etc.

Other things to think about:

– Who funded the study? Is it relevant for this study? Why or why not?

– Is the title misleading? Why or why not?

– What possible improvements could realistically be made to the study? If none,explain.

– What kind of follow up study would be useful/interesting?

– Any other comments? Ideas? Reflections?

Details:1- Your article must be approved before you proceed with your paper. No two studentscan share the same article. You can submit your article at any time between nowand November 20.2- Once you find your article, make sure to download and/or print it if you found itonline. Articles are sometimes deleted from the web, in which case a link to it willno longer work. Thus, make sure to attach a pdf file of the article with your paper.3- Your paper should be 1-2 pages. Please make an appointment with the WritingCenter if you need help.4- Point distribution (100 points total):a. Article submitted and approved before (November 20th, 11:59 pm): 10pts(2pts penalty for each day late i.e. submit early)b. Summary of the study’s findings: 20%c. Analysis: 50%d.
