MAT 240 SNHU Applications of Confidence Intervals Discussion

Question Description

For your initial post, choose one of the following two prompts to respond to. Then in your two follow up posts, respond at least once in each option. Use the discussion topic as a place to ask questions, speculate about answers, and share insights. Be sure to embed and cite your references for any supporting images.

Write a confidence interval problem using one of the options below. For whichever option you choose, gather the appropriate data and post your problem (without a solution) in the discussion topic. Allow time for your classmates to post their solutions, and then respond to your own post with the solution for others to check their work.

Option 1:

Think about a population mean that you may be interested in and propose a confidence interval problem for this parameter. Your data values should be approximately normal.

For example, you may want to estimate the population mean number of times that adults go out for dinner each week. Your data could be that you spoke with seven people you know and found that they went out 2, 0, 1, 5, 0, 2, and 3 times last week. You then would choose to calculate a 95% (or another level) confidence interval for the population mean.

Assume a random sample was chosen, which is required to determine a confidence interval.

Option 2:

Think about a population proportion that you may be interested in and propose a confidence interval problem for this parameter.

For example, you may like to estimate the population proportion of adults in the US who own SUVs. The data could be that you researched online by looking at a local dealership to find that 142 of the 432 vehicles sold are SUVs. You want to calculate a 90% (or another level) confidence interval for the population proportion. Assume a random sample.

For your response to a classmate (two responses are required, one in each option), solve a classmate’s confidence interval problem using a confidence level not previously used for that specific classmate’s problem. Make sure that you use appropriate terminology to state the problem and explain your solution.

WEEK 3 DISCUSSION BOARD PROMPT

For the discussion boards, two options are given for you to choose from for your initial post. In your response posts, you are required to respond at least once to each option.

This week you should have a minimum of four posts in total:

  1. Your initial post to either Option One or Option Two
  2. After allowing time for your classmates to post their solutions, respond to your own post with the solution.
  3. A response to one of your peers’ responses to Option One
  4. A response to one of your peers’ responses to Option Two

In your title for your discussion post, please clearly include which option you are answering by typing “Option One: [your title]” or “Option Two: [your title].”

As a part of your initial post, it is required for you to post your answer to the problem for your peers to check their work against in your responses. The discussion boards response posts will be hidden from your view until you make your own post first.

Please watch the following video for additional help and direction with these posts:

Notes on Discussion Board 3

OPTION ONE NOTES:

  • You should use proper statistic language for confidence intervals for a population mean
  • You should try to choose a unique confidence interval percentage (i.e. not 90, 95, or 99%)

OPTION TWO NOTES:

  • You should use proper statistic language for confidence intervals for a population proportion
  • You should try to choose a unique confidence interval percentage (i.e. not 90, 95, or 99%)

FOLLOW-UP RESPONSE NOTES:

  • Be sure to construct a full confidence interval sentence complete with your calculations and lower and upper bounds clearly defined.

EXAMPLE OF DISCUSSION BOARD POST:
Question (Initial Discussion Board post): The average gestation period for a Pomeranian is 60 days, with a standard deviation of 2.5 days. For a sample of 50 dogs, construct a confidence interval for the mean gestation period with 92% confidence.

Follow-up (To your Initial post and to your Classmates’ posts): We are 92% confident that the true population mean gestation period for Pomeranians is between [lower bound] and [upper bound] days.

After the initial post is posted I then will post the two replys that I need for classmates. If I am need to I will extend the time for the post
