It is composed of 4 separate parts:

1. Define your topic and relate it to the study of political science.

2. Describe why it is important. Is it an area of study that has been overlooked, for example?

3. Define what you hope to discover. Set clear and manageable parameters for what you hope to achieve.

4. Describe how you are going to do this (i.e. identify appropriate scholarly, web, and news sources). Be specific. Simply saying you will use the Internet or the SJSU Library is not sufficient.

Your challenge is to complete these four tasks (please number them!) in 500 words +/-2.

The word deadline is important. If you are way over 500 words you need to use your judgment to edit out what is not relevant.

If you are way under the word limit you need to do more research or pick a different topic.

This is your chance to explore an area of political science that really interests you. It can be from any sub-discipline (Theory, American, Comparative, International) but it should be something that you are passionate about. And it should be specific. Simply saying you are interested in ‘Latin American Politics’ won’t do. But saying that you are interested in discovering the causes, for example, of the current crisis in Venezuela is much better.
