Houston Community College Labelling of Columns in Data Set Paper & Excel sheet
Question Description
The DBs going forward will now all have this same format & will be weighted heavier than the earlier DBs & will be further spaced apart.
-Analyze Data
-Review 2 other posts & offer constructive feedback on their analysis (you may mention presentation- font, colors, readability, etc but primary focus is on data analysis)
Submit: You may choose however you would like to submit your analysis- only request is that the work be converted to PDF so everyone can read your file. You are more than welcome to work all problems out by hand.
Data Set: You will need to use the survey data we collected at start of the course. To find it go to Modules & search – (Control + F key ‘data’)
- Review the rules for rounding in Statistics (book or google search) know when it is acceptable to round up vs round down (for example discrete data)
- What is average of 11, 13 & 17? What is standard deviation (work problem by hand)
- Using the data set – label each column as nominal, ordinal, interval & explain – why did you label it that way? For example, if column A were “hair color’ – this is nominal b/c the data is color & colors can not be put into any meaningful order (& RoyGBiv does not count, just like alphabetical order does not count when dealing in Statistics…for example Hair Color: Black, Blond, Brown, etc.
- Calculate the mean, median & mode, & standard deviation of hours taken for following sets {all students, male students, female students}
- Which group is more dispersed in question above? Please explain how you determined this based off of your calculations & explain what that means without using statistical jargon.
- Create a cumulative frequency chart on the height of all students, explain in words how you figured out how many classes to include & how wide your intervals should be
Feedback post: due one week from original post due date. 100% of your grade will be based on this. You must peer review 2 posts and provide constructive feedback on their work to receive full credit.
Word of caution: Working with ‘survey’ data. As a data analyst you will need to be able to present and make sense out of data sets. Generally, I prefer to not give you step by step instructions given that part of beingnumeracy literate is to be able to determine what is relevant and what is not when it comes to including something in your analysis. Therefore, when using the ‘Class Data Set’ it will be up to you to ‘cleanse the data to remove any non-nonsensical inputs (noise) or determine how you want to edit typos/errors.
It is up to you; just be able to explain your logic should someone ask.
As they say…’garbage in..garbage out’ & one skill set a critical thinker must have is the ability to decipher does my answer what make sense? Not is it correct, but does it just make sense…if the number should be going up & you get a negative # – ask yourself why? This is something that comes along with good data analysis skills & habits.
