Question Description

Group discussion: We have our second group discussion scheduled for this week. You may focus on your nutrition education plan target audience for this week’s group discussion OR select a different group as your target audience for the purposes of the group discussion.

Response to discussion prompt (Original discussion threads posted by professor) is due on Thursday 11.59 pm, of the respective week. Please post what you view as the appropriate responses to the discussion prompts/questions. Please provide response with a clear, well-formulated thesis; sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and spelling count. Support all posts with appropriate rationale and citations from readings; appropriately document sources. Only those original discussion threads that have been posted by the THURSDAY 11.59 pm of the respective week will be taken into consideration when grading.

You are part of a team tasked with developing a nutrition education plan. Think about an audience of interest. This could be your nutrition education plan target audience or another population/community of interest. You are responsible for conducting a needs assessment of your audience. A needs assessment will help you better understand your audience and identify behaviors that the nutrition education plan could address.

You will rely on existing literature and data, policy documents, and primary sources of information for this activity.

1. What would you like to know from the existing data/information? What are the potential sources of information to help guide the needs assessment process? How will you gather the information needed to support the needs assessment process? Be specific. For example which online sources (provide webpage addresses), document titles, policy documents, reports and journal articles will you use?

2. Will you collect primary information from your audience? If yes, what methods will you use to collect the information (interviews, discussions, imagery, etc). What would you like to know from the primary data collection? Provide a list of the questions you would like to ask. If possible, conduct an interview or discussion with a member or members of your target audience. What types of assessments do you need to conduct? What indicators do you need?

3. Discuss your target audience characteristics (demographic, socio-economic status, cultural beliefs and practices, common dietary practices/norms, values, wants and priorities, etc.)

4. Identify your audiences’ health issue /topic of concern (non-health-related issues such as environmental, food system, societal issues can be identified as well) that are influenced by nutrition or food-related behavior. For example obesity, cardiovascular disease, undernutrition, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, excess food waste, etc.

5. What are the nutrition or food-related behavior concerns that contribute to the problems identified? How prevalent is/are the behavior/behaviors?

6. Rate each behavior, using a 1 (lowest) – 5 (highest) scale, on “importance”, “modifiability”, “feasibility” and “desirability”.

An example of behavior rating table shown in below:
