FSU Anthropology Data Collection Process for Behavior Data Worksheet
Question Description
Hello,
This assignment is an Anthropology Assignment. Below are the 2 separate assignment for the project, which involves to responding to 2 students.
___________________________________________
Prompt: you learned many of the methodologies archaeologists utilize to study the past. For Part II, you will need to apply archaeological methodologies to study your archaeological site or artifact(s). You will need to share how you are coding and collecting your data; you will need to turn in 2 weeks worth of data on a spreadsheet or in a table ( you can make those up)
Examples: For example, if you are documenting your daily habits, such as what you throw away, you might create a spreadsheet to note the day, time, and objects you are consuming. You should create your own codes for that data (e.g. food, drink, class supplies (see below)). Here is an example:
Date |
Time |
Item Placed in Trash |
Code for Item |
11/1/2020 |
8:30am |
Banana peel |
Food |
11/2/2020 |
10am |

11/3/2020 |
2pm |

11/3/2020 |
1:32pm |

If you are documenting the habits of people outside of your house, you might create a spreadsheet to note the day, time, artifacts, and behaviors you witness. You should create your own codes for that data (e.g. walker w/dog; runner; garbage truck (see below)). Here is an example of a spreadsheet documenting a local walking trail:
Date |
Time |
Behavior/Material Culture |
Location |
Code |
11/1/2020 |
9:45am |
Woman in her 40s walking her dog on south end of trail |
Riverwalk trail |
Walker w/dog |
11/2/2020 |
10am |
Man in 20s drops piece of trash on trail; does not pick it up |
Riverwalk trail |

11/2/2020 |
5pm |
Trail empty |

11/2/2020 |
9pm |
Older man in 60s (?) running on trail |
Riverwalk trail; avoids walking near trash left earlier today on trail |

Answer the text/ student post below in regards of the project:
1. How is your data collection going? What are some challenges you have encountered thus far?
2. What have you learned thus far about human behavior as part of your project?
3. How do you plan on analyzing, grouping, and/or organizing your data for the final part of the project?

My project is comparing the trash from 2 people in an apartment to one person in a dorm and to compare lifestyles.
1. My data collection is going pretty smoothly. I thought I might run into some difficulties because I was relying on someone else to collect data, but it hasn’t become a problem. It has been a bit overwhelming to keep track of multiple peoples trash, but I’ve managed.
2. I’ve learned that the most common type of trash thrown away is dealing with food in some way. I thought that I was pretty good at recycling most things but lots of food packaging and containers cannot be recycled so they end up going to the trash. I also noticed that a lot of the trash get thrown away during meal times.
3. I’ve collected all my data on an excel sheet and organized it by date, time, item in trash, and the code. I plan on doing a podcast of some sort to discuss my data and hopefully getting some input from the person living in the dorm. If I can’t get him to speak directly for the podcast, I will probably ask him some question to add into my recording.

My data collection is going well so far. My apartment complex has stayed pretty busy throughout the last few weeks so I have been able to observe lots of garbage coming in and going out.
I have learned that many college students are messy and will not throw things away even if the dumpster is right next to them which is a little disheartening, in all honesty.
I plan on compiling everything into an Excel spreadsheet and maybe tracking to see if more garbage accumulates during colder months when people are less likely to be spending time outside.
