Procedure:
- 1)Identify and research the discovery of a vitamin essential to human health.Recommendations include niacin, vitamins A, E or K, B-12, folate, and biotin. Do not choose vitamin C or Thiamin since we discuss these topics in detail during the course.
- 2)Utilize online and academic journals to gather information regarding the individual. Web of Science and Google Scholar available through ASU libraries are good sources of journal articles.
- 3)Develop a 2-3 page summary of the discovery of the vitamin in a time-sequenced manner. The paper should be double-spaced with 1 inch margins and 12 pt font.
- a)Describe the process of observation, exploration, and experimentation that led to the discovery of the vitamin. Include both animal and human studies. Recognize that the discovery of a vitamin is not one event rather a series of findings and studies that continue into the present.
- b)Explain how observations [of animal and/or human disease, for example] came to be linked to diet. Identify historical views of the vitamin that have since been shown to be invalid.
- c)Describe the public health and/or medical benefits that arose from discovering the vitamin selected which are currently recommended by scientific research.
Identify the researchers by name and location; include the approximate years of each piece of research, etc. Within the time sequence, identify CORRECT as well as INCORRECT conclusions/assumptions made as the process of discovery moved along. Each vitamin has had numerous researchers involved in its initial discovery and role in the human body, include all researchers who significantly contributed to our understanding. Recognize that vitamin research continues and much is still unknown, you do not need to include current researchers in your paper.
