Central Michigan University Hobbes Political Philosophy and Practice Discussion
Question Description
I’m working on a Philosophy discussion question and need a sample draft to help me learn.
For this new discussion, I want your first post to start a new thread and focus either on Hobbes or on the battle between Kant and Mill.
If you choose to talk about Hobbes, I want you to discuss the claims he makes and the progression his arguments take. Is he right about equality leading to conflict leading to war? Why/ why not? Is he right that we’re all selfish and that we need a leviathan to keep us in check? Why/ why not?
If you choose to talk about Kant/Mill, I want you to discuss the merits and defects of each side. What’s correct or incorrect about focusing solely on duty? What’s correct or incorrect about focusing solely on consequences? Which of the two do you think makes a stronger case and why? Remember, you can’t just say “I don’t like it” or “it doesn’t make sense” or “you have to consider both consequences and duty”. You have to tell me WHY it doesn’t make sense. What’s the flaw in the argument? You have to say WHY you have to consider both consequences and duty. What’s the logical reason for such a requirement?
