CCCC Independent Project Absolute and Relative Deprivation Phenomenon Discussion
Question Description
Independent Project: Absolute and Relative Deprivation
Think about what it means to be rich or poor in the United States. This relates to two concepts in the sociological study of stratification called absolute deprivation and relative deprivation. Absolute deprivation refers to a state of lacking in basic needs, such as food, water, safe shelter, etc. Relative deprivation, by contrast, is when a person feels deprived based on lacking what others have (others to which we compare ourselves).
For this assignment, watch two to three episodes of home buying and/or remodeling television programming (e.g., Home and Garden Television (HGTV) channel). Look for specific observable examples of behaviors and communication that can be interpreted as instances of either absolute or relative deprivation. Be sure to note how you concluded that observation was an example of either absolute or relative deprivation, and note any ambiguity you encountered during your observation. Discuss and reflect on what you found in two to three typed paragraphs.
