For the project, students will summarize a news event and the ways in which a an academic source (book/article) sheds light on the issue(s) involved in the event. They will then record a 10-15 minute presentation of their findings using PowerPoint/Prezi
Identify which religious tradition you have been assigned and summarize the current event involving your religious tradition that you will be presenting on; be sure to include the bibliographic information for the periodical you are using for your current event at the end of your summary.
The subject or issue of Muslim tradition assigned is determining the influence of Covid-19 on Mecca’s annual pilgrim journey. The gathering has been affected by the different regulations over the pandemic, which has affected global societies and communities. The annual gathering at the sacred city of Mecca is 2.5 million people in the annual event. According to the news article, the gathering has been scaled down to 1000 people. This scaling down is why the new normal will hurt the Muslim tradition of the pilgrim journey and gathering. Considering the pilgrim gathering’s celebrations and its many implications, 2020 will be a changing factor for many traditions. Muslims present and showcase their annual gathering as a common binding factor. Many travel from far and wide globally to attend this annual event. Let’s hope 2021 will be a good year, where many Muslims and other religious groups will pray and celebrate normally.
RE: Project
Approved! I think a great academic source to get from the university library to analyze your news story would be one that examined the history of the Hajj along with various historical events that kept it from being held as it normally would (whether those events were previous pandemics, regional/geo-political conflict, etc.). That way, you could put this current pandemic-related interruption of the Hajj in historical perspective, discussing the ways the current moment is similar to and also different from previous instances of the Hajj being interrupted in some way.
